ABOUT

US

Let's start by introducing ourselves: we are Synkratos, the study association for Ancient Sciences and Archeology in Amsterdam, for students from  the VU and UvA. Together with study association Laverna, for Greek and Latin Language and Culture, we belong to ACASA (Amsterdam Center for Ancient Studies and Archaeology). We maintain close contact with the ACASA board and the Laverna board through a separate committee that organizes joint events.

Every summer there are several excavations in which the students can participate and every year a symposium is organized with all Antiquity courses in the Netherlands. International and national speakers will be present here. In addition to these major events, we as an association also organize drinks, educational activities such as a visit to the latest exhibitions in the National Museum of Antiquities, bowling evenings, cocktail evenings, game evenings, a trip abroad, and much more. Synkratos also acts as an important means of communication between students and students. We can pass on points for improvement and any complaints to the right people.

HISTORY

It all started with the merger of Koinon (association for Archaeology and GLTC) and Underground (association for Archaeology) into a joint study association in 2014. It is not surprising that the name Synkratos was chosen: The word Syn is derived from the ancient Greek σύν 'sun' (together) and the word Kratos  (Cratos) (Greek: Κρατος, Latin: Cratus) is derived from the Greek god Kratos, the personification of strength and power.

In the past years, the Universities have made concrete plans to accommodate the studies Archaeology, Ancient Sciences and Greek and Latin Language and Culture of the Free University and the University of Amsterdam under one institute, ACASA. The study program was adapted and the lectures mainly moved to the center of Amsterdam. That is why study association Trilithon and Synkratos started thinking about joining forces. Trilithon was founded on October 3, 1968 and was the study association of European archeology at the IPP, the old archeology institute for Northwest European archeology at the University of Amsterdam. Later, the department of Mediterranean archeology was also added. At the beginning of 2018, the merger was completed and it was decided to continue under the name of Synkratos.
